Filming for the best results
- Stand side-on. Put the phone to the side of the player, level with the hitting area, not in front or behind.
- Hip height. Prop the phone at about hip height on a bag, fence or tripod.
- Whole body in frame. Head to feet, with room for the racket swing.
- One stroke per clip. Pick the stroke in the app first, and don't mix forehands and backhands in one video.
- Keep the phone still and film in good light.
- Use the in-app recorder. It films at up to 120 fps. Slow-motion clips from the Camera app can have their timing changed when imported.
The full illustrated guide is in the app: tap How to film on a player's page, or the ? button in the recorder.
Common questions
Why is a measurement missing from my results?
RallyRead skips a measurement rather than guess when the video can't show it clearly, for example when the hitting arm is blurred at contact, the camera is in front of or behind the player, or legs or shoulders are out of frame. If fewer than four measurements can be made, there's no overall score. Re-film side-on with the whole body visible.
The swing count is wrong.
Swings are found from peaks in hand speed. Very slow practice swings may be missed, and big movements between shots can be counted. Film steady, full-speed strokes with a short pause between them.
It's following the wrong person.
When several people are in view, RallyRead follows the largest person at the start of the clip. Start the recording with the player closest to the camera.
Why did my score drop after I moved up a level?
Each level has stricter targets. A lower score at a new level is expected and gives you more to work toward.
Can I re-score old sessions?
Yes. Open a session, tap ••• and choose Re-analyze.
Do my videos get uploaded?
No. Analysis runs on your device and RallyRead has no servers. See the privacy policy.
How do I delete my data?
Swipe to delete a session or a player in the app. Deleting a player removes all of their videos and results. Deleting the app removes everything.
Which devices are supported?
iPhone and iPad with iOS 17 or later. Filming needs a rear camera, and newer iPhones analyze faster.
A note on scores
RallyRead's scores and tips are a training aid based on body positions seen in a 2D video. They are not a substitute for a qualified coach, and they are not medical advice. Stop and see a professional if you feel pain while playing.
